Paul de Waard was hit three times when he and a lawyer tried to stop the gunman dragging a woman out of a taxi in June 2007. De Waard did not die but the lawyer was shot dead.

The award was announced during a European Union meeting in the Croatian town of Split. The international jury said it had been impressed by Uden’s public parks, which last year earned it the award for the greenest town in the Netherlands. The organisers of the yearly prize aim to convince towns, residents and companies across Europe of the vital importance of good public parks.
