Fifth suspect arrested in van der Kouwe case

Police in Bonaire have arrested a fifth person in connection with the death of Marlies van der Kouwe, a Dutch citizen who disappeared last month. The 25-year-old man was arrested in the Tera Kora the hood of the capital Kralendijk. Police also searched two premises in the capital. Three of the five people arrested in connection with the case are still in custody. The body of the 24-year-old pharmacist’s assistant was discovered on Friday. She disappeared on 21 of September after leaving a beach party to cycle home.

Later this week, the body will be transported to the Netherlands for further investigation by the Netherlands Forensic Institute. Earlier today, Dutch Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin announced that the Netherlands will help Bonaire pay for the murder investigation as the island, which is a part of the Netherlands Antilles, does not have the financial resources to pay for it.

Cartel watchdog fines Sara Lee

The competition authority NMa has fined food and personal care products giant Sara Lee Nederland almost €270,000. The penalty is for breaking the seals on a door to a room which was being used by NMa investigators to gather evidence in a cartel probe.

It is the first time the NMa has fined a company for breaking the seals, which could imply that potential evidence had been tampered with, the organisation said.

A chef who murdered a boyfriend before cooking a section of his flesh with fresh herbs and olive oil and chewing a piece has been jailed for a minimum of 30 years.

Former Mr Gay UK Anthony Morley, 36, from Bexley Place, Leeds, was sentenced to life in jail after he was found guilty at Leeds Crown Court of murdering Damian Oldfield in April this year.

Morley slashed 33-year-old Mr Oldfield’s throat before stabbing him multiple times and cutting sections of flesh from his body.

Sentencing Morley, Judge James Stewart, QC, said this was “one of the most gruesome murders” he had ever encountered.

“ING” shares go up after Dutch funding

The Amsterdam stock exchange has reacted positively to the Dutch government’s injection of capital into ING bank. Shortly after the exchange opened, shares in the bank increased by 20 percent on Friday’s low. Politicians in The Hague and the country’s trade unions are also generally pleased with the move, which is costing the state ten billion euros.

Drunken pilot arrested in cockpit

At London’s Heathrow airport, the pilot of a Boeing 777 has been arrested for attempting to fly while drunk. The man was preparing for a flight to San Francisco when British police, tipped off by ground crew, asked him to take a breath test in the cockpit. When he was found to have had too much to drink, he was escorted from the plane in front of hundreds of passengers. The pilot, whose identity has not been revealed, has been placed temporarily on non-active status.
